Hot summer, long shadows!
It was just delightful to have family visiting over the last few weeks. We did all kinds of fun Birmingham things that I don’t do on the regular: visit the McWane Center, see a play at the Red Mountain Theater, and visit some establishments I didn’t even know existed, like Basic and The Frothy Monkey.
Scrolling through photos of moments with the grands allows me to relive good times when I miss them. But I am now back to my regular studio hours, and this is also joyful for me as my pieces focus on nostalgic moments that, on the surface, seem ordinary but, when contemplated, become extraordinary.
I’ve made a little progress on the long summer shadows piece, and it is starting to show me what it is going to be; plus, the name has arrived: The Soul of Summer. This painting is still in the important sketching-it-out phase, where I find and correct any issues in space, color, and composition.
A painting can hold onto a moment the way a photo does, but it’s even warmer because it lives on your wall instead of on an app or in a drawer.
